Mercedes Hopes to Buff Its Image

For many, the Mercedes-Benz represents the height of automotive engineering, or something. For many others, it's a status symbol. The latter it most certainly is. The former some of our readers aren't so sure about.

One reason for the recent spate of complaints may have to do with the growing reliance on electronics in today's cars and porked-up SUVs. European cars have always been known for, shall we say, delicate electrical systems. Adding gadgets of the complexity now common in the Benz is a recipe for big trouble -- and very big repair bills.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints ...

Ali of Chantilly VA (02/03/09)
I bought a Mercedes G55 from the Tysons Corner area mercedes a year ago and ever since have had numerous problems with my car and have had no help and it always comes back fixed and the next day it happons again. I own a 90,000.00 vehicle and get treated like this! Today they refused to come pick up my car for service because they have done as much as they can!

I own a Mercedes car C200K model 2006, WDB 2030425A836694. All sevices has been done in the authorized workshops. The car has not subjected to any accident. The warranty has passed few moths ago. Aout 50,000 km, I heard a leak sound when I turn the A/C on, and the temp. is not good. Day by day, the problem getting worse. I went to the service center where they told me that there is a puncture in the A/C coil which needs replacement. It will take tow days and price is exteremly high.

I wonder how such a dangerous damage happens in a Mercedes car in such a short operating time? As an engineer I think this is a material defect.

The power seats in Mercedes C320s years 2001-2003 begin to constantly drain one's battery causing the car to be unable to start if not turned on with a 12-24 hour period. Simply google disconnect power seats mercedes c320 and you'll find forum after forum of individuals attempting to work around this issue to avoid the extravagant mercedes serving costs.

The economic damage is about 1500 per vehicle

Harla of Irvine, CA January 7, 2009

Harla of Irvine CA (01/07/09)
My 2003 E 320 has had more things go wrong with it in the year and a half that I have owed it, than any other vehicle I've ever owened. I am VERY glad I bought the extended warranty! All Tire Pressure Monitor Garuges have gone out, Power Steering Leeked and had to be replace and is now (less than 6 months later) leaking again! The 6 disc changer died and it took 4 months to get my CD's back from the dealer.

This car is a nighmare. I'm getting rid of it and I'll be relieved, although from the outside, she is a beautiful car, its to bad its not a sound car! I have put 23,000 miles for all of these things to have gone wrong. I'm going back to American Cars, well if their still in business. My last Pontiac lasted until 168K miles and replaced her water pump once and alternator twice with a fraction of the cost of this MB! Plus many more miles. The Pontiac was totalled when I was hit so thought I would splurge and buy the MB. What a mistake! Now I can't get my money back out of it!

I do not recomment buying any 2003 E320 Sedan! Also I did not know when I bought this Pre-Owned Benz that it had been in a car wreck prior to my purchase! Carmax pointed it out to me when I tried to sell it!

Gregory of Marlton, NJ January 5, 2009

Gregory of Marlton NJ (01/05/09)
Vehicle experienced total unexpected brake failure. Dealer has not been forthcoming about issue except to say that the entire ABS hydraulic system failed

No harm done but warning to other drivers out there on this model year.
