Diana of Alexandria, VA, writes:

I bought a Chrysler minivan in November 1993.  In May 1997 the engine died when I was on my way back from Georgia.  When the engine died, I took the van to the Dodge dealer close to where I lived.  They could not work on the van because I was told the warranty I had was not a Chrysler warranty.

I called the main office of Chrysler and was told that the warranty I was sold was from a company that the dealer had picked out and that was why the Dodge dealership could not work on the van.

The transmission had to be rebuilt in February 1998.  When the engine died, it was just before the extended warranty expired.  The cost of repairing the engine was broken down piece by piece and half of the parts were not covered by the warranty.  I had to pay $900 out-of-pocket.  This only covered part of the repairs.  The company paid $900.  There were some repairs that were not done because I did not have that kind of money.

So only what was needed to get the van running was done.  When I put the van in for the engine work the air conditioner was working, and when I got the van back the air conditioner was not working.  I was told that it would cost me another $700 to $900 to get the air conditioner fixed.  Again the parts needed were not covered under warranty.

The transmission was totally paid out-of-pocket.  After the transmission was done, then the engine started making noises again.  It was right after the 12 month warranty on the repairs was done.  So I finally got rid of the van.  It was just costing too much.

Chrysler says they had not had any complaints on their transmissions or problems with them failing.  Evidently this is not true.  Chrysler is doing shoddy work on their vehicles and are being allowed to get away with it, which I do not think is fair to the consumer.

It cost me half of the cost of the engine repairs plus $1,700 for the transmission.  I had to go three months with no car and had to catch the bus to work because I did not have the money when the transmission went and I went two months without the van while saving the money when the engine went.
