Ford Escape - Engine Problems

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

My 2008 Ford Escape transmission failed after 75,000 miles. I was very disappointed due to the fact that I purchased it brand new in June of 2007 and paid every note on time. In early 2008, the car gas paddle broke and in 2009, the A/C failed. To make a long story short, I am building this truck for Ford and paying them to do it. All Ford would say is that my warranty expired at 60,000 miles and there are no recalls on this truck, which means to me that the truck is only good for 60,000 miles.

Ford Services quoted me $4,000 to replace the transmission on my truck, knowing that every other vehicle they build transmissions have failed (they have transmission recalls). The reason why I purchased a new truck was to ensure myself as a single parent that I would not be on the side of the road with my children being able to get to work. Ford has left my family struggling--no ride to work, no way to school (my girls), and no food on the table. This is a major crush in my life. I will have to pond everything I have to raise the money for these repairs. I was up all night trying to figure out how my family will get from point A to B. I really don't know where to turn and I'm sure that they're going to want my August payment.

I bought a used 2005 Ford Escape in July 2008, had little problems at first, then in Dec 2010, the powertrain control module blew up. Since then, I've had nothing but big problems, as I speak, it is back in shop with another 2000.00 converter problem, which mechanic said that the front end has major issues like control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings and tie rod ends. In November 2010, I had stabilizer bushing bar links replaced. This is a never ending repair job. I will never buy Ford again!

I recently (only about a year ago) got my Ford Escape and loved it until I started experiencing various problems with this truck. I have done regular oil changes, brake changes, fluids etc. That's not the issue! I now am experiencing a rough ride every time I drive my car. When starting it reams up to about 3rpms and then backs down so low it dies while in park. Also if it doesn't die immediately it shifts up and down like it's jumping from about 0-1 rpms. Since this is my only way of transportation, I'm stuck driving it and trying to figure out the issue. The check engine light came on and I went and had code read. The list of issues started with vacuum leak-checked, idler control valve-replaced, mass airflow sensor-replaced, oxygen sensors (4)-2 replaced. I'm about $500 in on just parts not including cost of actual labor.

The code is now off and car is still acting up worse than ever! Other replacements I've made: Ball joints-easy fix. If any idea or help out there please let me know.

I purchased a 2002 Ford Escape brand new. The vehicle at 67,000 miles has a blown engine. It started to knock, so I took it in to my local dealership, where they informed that the short block was blown. I have also spoken with another mechanic that told me exactly what was wrong with it without even looking at it. He commented that this was a common problem with Escapes. I am a 55-year old grandmother and the only driver of this vehicle. I have contacted the Ford Care Center and they were not helpful. I spoke with one of their reps with no results, so, I requested to speak with a supervisor, I was told he was currently unavailable but he would get back to me. That was over a month ago. I still have not heard back from them.

Had I known when I purchased the vechicle that it would only get 67,000 miles out of it, I would never have purchased one. I am looking at a $6,000 repair on a car that is only worth $6,500 after the repair is made.

I have purchased a new 2009 Ford Escape back in July 2009. It has been a little over one year, and I have been dealing with problem with the car since my 3rd month after purchase. First, the engine was ticking so Ford had to replace the right cylinder head and done that twice-- yes, a head job on a brand new car with less than 5K miles.

Now, at ~16k miles transmission problems, including hard engagement and leaking problem, the Ford dealer has worked on it 4 times and the transmission is still leaking. To add to that, the stabilizer bar on the front end of the car was making a snapping noise, where they had to replace and yet the noise returned after one month. I am very disappointed with Ford's poor quality of customer service, and equality of their product. And I wish there is a way to have Ford convinced to buy back their junk that they have sold me.

The Hydraulic control unit went out in my 2006 Hybrid Escape. I can see things going wrong with the car as it has 101,000 miles on it. However, the replacement unit costs $4,500 plus 4 hours to install. That's almost $5,000 for a replacement part on a car that cost $28,000. I could buy an engine or a transmission with thousands of parts for less than that. I must say, the dealer has been sympathetic, but there is really not much he can do. I will never buy another Ford product again and I am a Ford guy. The pricing on this unit is absolutely criminal since I have no choice but to buy it from Ford. There is no alternative.

I put in transmission my 2003 Ford Escape in Feb. 2008, cost with labor was $1,948.00 . In Feb. 2010, I put another transmission, costing $1,600 by the same transmission shop. In June 2010, transmission went out again but no cost. In Oct 2010, it will cost $1,500 to fix the frame and axle, control arms and wheel barrings, and I can't put car in drive unless I pop the cap to push the button to put car in gear. The Ford dealership that found all the issues stated this vehicle is a danger.

Please someone needs to investigate the company Ford before someone is hurt with all the defects within the Ford Escape. They are putting people in a dangerous vehicle. Please someone hear me out there that care. I feel that I need to be compensated.

Well, I own a 2001 Ford Escape xls 4dr v6 4x4. My transmission goes out. I got it rebuilt at 154,763 miles for $1100 at a little shop. 2 weeks later, it broke down again. They fixed the problem. They rebuilt it all over again. This went on for the whole 7 months of my warranty. Then finally, when it seems to have gotten better, it breaks again. Now I took it to another guy for $1900. He asked for the rebuilds. One week later, it broke down. Good for me, he gave a 1-year warranty. But now it's trashed. The tranny is. So, he kept the Ford for 1 month trying. He bought another tranny and this one breaks down.

I'm down to last 2 months of my warranty. Now I have no job to fix this tranny again. Ford says it's not their problem that the tranny needed to be lubed more! On top of all that, the tranny leaks fluid and smokes like crazy. It worries me because can't something like that ignite a fire with fluid leaking out, causing major smoke? I have looked at the complaint list on 2001 Ford Escape reviews and complaints. It's all about the transmission going out. I need advice or some kind of legal help please.

I purchased a 2009 Escape late January 09. The SUV has had continual transmission-related problems and is currently in the shop with an estimated release from repairs of 3 weeks. Adding up the total days, they vastly approach the NM Lemon Laws. I am paying for a vehicle that I am not able to drive.

I was driving on I-77N before the Ghent exit. My 2002 Ford Escape engine began to knock. I pulled off at the exit and had the vehicle towed to Ramey Ford. They told me it needed a new engine. The vehicle had only 47,502 miles on it. I opened a case with Ford. It was reviewed and rejected. This little incident has cost the following: Engine $4388, Rental $175, Towing $75, Extra gas around $50.

Purchased a 2001 Ford Escape in Febuary of 2001. Since I have owned the car the engine has been replaced. Since then I have an extended warranty that covers the power train offered free of charge in exchange for my suffering.

After experiencing some strange noise coming from under my brake pedal I have taken it in to the dealer to have it checked out, with this as my response: "We can hear the noise/whistling sound but we don't know what is causing it, therefore we cannot fix it" ... "of course it continues you never fixed it."

I paid $220 for my 33k maintenance just a week before and asked them to look into the problem only to be told the same thing: "Pads are good, not sure what the sound is and it's safe for the road don't worry about it." When I took my car back into the dealer to have the brakes checked once and for all, while at the dealer my key is not working, seems the "theft" mode is on. Turn off the alarm and try again ... nope. Service attendant pops the hood, attaches a battery charger, set off the panic on the remote and then turn it off and yes it works. Then he turns it off, never to get it started again -- the ignition is completely locked and the key won't even turn.

They push the car into the garage and call me 6 hours later to tell me I need a new dash and cluster for no less than $600 and $70 to reprogram the keys. After my initial shock, I am told that they still don't know what is causing the brake problem and that even if I reprogram the keys there is no warranty this will fix any of the other issues, also that they won't be able to warranty the work!

I am well aware of the normal wear and tear of a car but they should not have all the issues mine has had. I am fed up and can no longer afford this mentally or financially.

Charline should consult a Lemon Law attorney.
