I received a 1998 Mercury Sable as a company car in November 1997. Shortly after receiving the vehicle, I noted that the brakes pulsated and the car shimmied when I tried to stop. I had experienced this before with other Taurus/Sable cars and knew it was likely due to warped brake rotors. I lived with the problem until the car had 35,000, then took it in for a brake job. Once again after about 3,000 miles it was vibrating even worse. I just took the car in at 57,000 miles for another brake job.
The service writer tells me this is a common problem with both the Sable and Taurus that they frankly can't fix. Turning the rotors or replacing them provide only temporary relief.
I drive about 25,000 to 35,000 miles per year as do other members of my sales team at (approximately 75 who drive Taurus/Sables). As a result of either poor engineering or poor parts quality we are inconvenienced at every stop by shimmying steering wheels and pulsating brake pedals, even in new autos. Ford should be required to come up with a fix for the problem.
