Sure, they look tough. But underneath that brawny exterior, there are lots of delicate little parts. The most disastrous common problem is low oil pressure, leading to engine failure. Although this is happening like clockwork, DaimlerChrysler is refusing to accept responsibility.

Not only that, the Durango tends to go through ball joints like a dog through a pound of hamburger. This is not only expensive but can -- and does -- cause serious accidents, as many of our readers will tell you. The feds have finally put the arm on DaimlerChrysler to do a recall but there's some debate over whether the recall covers all of the affected models.

Walter of Talbott TN (09/24/07)
I am experiencing the same problem with my brakes that the latest Chrysler products recall is having. My brakes do the same thing that the Dodge Nitro and Jeep is doing. I have run 2 stop signs because of the delay I experience when I go up a small hill below my house. When I try to stop and make a turn the brakes delay and then go almost to the floor. I have reported it to the dealership where I purchased the Durango. Since it doesn't do it everytime they just tell me it within specs.

I just wanted to put in my two sense. I own a 1998 Dodge Durango and a former owner of a 2001 Dodge Ram Diesel. WE have had MAJOR problems with both. The Durango only has 94,000 miles. It is only used for a family vehicle. At 50,000 miles, we had to replace the transmission. It has also been in for heater issues, replaced the water pump, thermostat x 2 and just replaced the transmission again. We are now having issues with it overheating. It has been maintained. The 2001 Ram, we had to replace the Transmission, transfer case and multiple little items.

Terry of Pinckney MI (09/06/07)
my 2002 dodge durango had a recall in 2005 for ball joint and tie-rod replacement. I had them replaced with 44,000 on the odometer. sunday august 26 while driving east on m-36 my vehicle suddenly and without warning turned violently to the right sending me crashing into a steel guardrail. the car catipulted up on the guardrail and continued another 40 feet. the air bags and seat belt saved my life. i did suffer trauma both mental and physical. both knees which were being treated for arthritis were further damaged and i must wear immobilizer splints for the next 8 weeks and stay off my feet. my left hand was burned in two places each the size of a quarter and my right wrist was severely sprained with torn tendons and small fractures and a splint must be worn . i am unable to lift anything or even fish as realling is impossible. i have very limited motion in my right hand. this is extremely painful and i have been taking pain medication. the doctor said it will be another 6 to eight weeks and then things should return or start returning to normal. mentally, i have been forgetful, doing things like putting frozen goods in the cupboard, turning on the stove and forgetting about it, locking my keys in my car a number of small things that i normally don't ever do. the car was totaled out and i am currently dealing with my insurance company now. i do not understand what bodily injury damages i am entitled to but i did have full coverage on the vehicle.

Bought a 2001 Dodge Durango with 36K miles put 19K additional miles and Check Engine light came on and I lost power. There was knocking from engine. Took it to Mechanic and was informed needed New Engine. They implied that I overheated the engine or failed to have it serviced on a regular basis. Neither is true as I have all of my Service reciepts from the Dealership. Further investigation from the mechanic upon our request uncovered Engine Sludge! We will never buy Dodge again.
