Sure, they look tough. But underneath that brawny exterior, there are lots of delicate little parts. The most disastrous common problem is low oil pressure, leading to engine failure. Although this is happening like clockwork, DaimlerChrysler is refusing to accept responsibility.

Not only that, the Durango tends to go through ball joints like a dog through a pound of hamburger. This is not only expensive but can -- and does -- cause serious accidents, as many of our readers will tell you. The feds have finally put the arm on DaimlerChrysler to do a recall but there's some debate over whether the recall covers all of the affected models.

Michael of Richmond Hill GA (11/01/07)
While driving my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Cummins Diesel at approximately 35 mph, my right front tire came off causing me to lose control of my vehicle. Exact cost of repair is yet to be decided, but damage was more than moderate. The lug nuts did not fall off. The hub bolts sheered off without warning. Damage is in that tire, the rotor, brake system, front right quarter panel, right side front passenger's door, and suspension system. The police officer said we were lucky to be going so slow around a curve with a 40 foot embankment drop-off. I have read NHSTA bulletins and Dodge Forum websites and found that this problem is more than common. My truck did have a slight vibration on bumps which I was told was normal. However, after this incident and reading hundreds of other complaints, this issue need to be handled now...with sole responsibility lying on Dodge Corporation. This is unsafe. People have been hurt. All readers say the same things and agree that Dodge will not do anything about this problem. We need someone to confront the automaker and demand safety recalls immediately.

2000 Dodge Durango 5.9L eng. So far I have had to replace master brake cylinder, transmission, and engine, all at less than 100k miles, now 40k after 1st transmission replacement my 2nd transmission is failing. I can't believe how bad this vehicle is. I drive infrequently as I had to buy another vehicle for my commute and for a reliable vehicle. I read all these other people having simlar problems and I wonder how this company stays in business.

I was in a car accident recently while driving a 2001 Dodge Durango. The problem was the air bags never deployed and the seat belts never locked when we rolled the durango through a ditch. We all reached down and unbuckled our seat belts as if nothing had happened. The drivers seatbelt never even keep me to the seat when i undid mine i was already on the roof of the suv. The police told us it was a miracle that we did not end up seriously hurt because of the seat belts not locking they were shocked when they got to the scene and we were already out of the vehicle and they did not have to cut the seat belts they said this is a serious problem! What should we do about this serious problem?

Three of the passengers ended up in the hospital because of the seat belts not locking!!

I was driving my 2003 Dodge Dakota on us hwy 90 in Morgan City La The front left side of the truck took a dive and the truck veered hard to the left, hitting a baracade. The boat that i was towing was sent over the baracade into oncoming traffic where it struck another car. The repair shop that my truck is located told me that the lower driver's side ball joint was rusty, and looked to have separated from the lower control arm, and was the cause of my wreck. He then told me to pursue this matter because my wreck was caused by faulty steering components. I told him to make sure the parts were saved and pictures are taken of the rust, that is were it shouldn't be.
