Sure, they look tough. But underneath that brawny exterior, there are lots of delicate little parts. The most disastrous common problem is low oil pressure, leading to engine failure. Although this is happening like clockwork, DaimlerChrysler is refusing to accept responsibility.

Not only that, the Durango tends to go through ball joints like a dog through a pound of hamburger. This is not only expensive but can -- and does -- cause serious accidents, as many of our readers will tell you. The feds have finally put the arm on DaimlerChrysler to do a recall but there's some debate over whether the recall covers all of the affected models.

I drive a 2001 Dodge Durango and have read complaints but never made one. Many times I have been driving, at many different speeds, and my Durango will just all of a sudden shift into 2nd gear. Also, Several years ago I was delivering my son to day care, I put my car in park and left the car running. I walked around my car to take my child out of the opposite back seat, opened the passenger backseat, and my car started rolling into the building. The transmission must have slipped as it has been doing when driving. My car has never stayed in alignment and I'm not sure it that is due to hitting the building or the ball joints which have had work too.

My 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab (w/ a HEMI). caught on fire in my driveway after sitting for about 11 hours.Chrysler hired a local company to come out and take pictures of the truck, and send them his pictures and findings.MY truck burnt to the ground and it got my house also.

I purchased the Durango from Crown Honda. I noticed that the check engine light was on. I had them to check to see why the light was on. The salesman (Shawn) told me that the mechanic said the gas cap wasn't on tight. Well what ever they did he cleared it out. Two days later the light came back on and I had to take the truck back again. They cleared it out again but this time he said there was something wrong with the gas line and he had to put some dye in the line to see what was going on but its nothing major. Well, they cleared the light again and now its back on again. My car now puts every now and then acting like its about to shut off.

I took my 1998 Dodge Durango in for an alignment check and State Inspection. We purchased a 5-year warranty on the alignment 2 years ago at Merchant's, but have had to show the paperwork to prove we have the warranty each time we bring the car in for an alignment. They can never seem to find the coverage in their computer system until we show the proof of purchase. When inspecting the vehicle, we were told we needed all four ball joints replaced before the vehicle would pass inspection. I told them I would wait on the repairs for now, but I wanted the alignment checked anyway - the car had been hit broadside and I wanted to make sure the frame was OK before the adjuster came to give his estimate. The printout showed one of the wheels were in specs *before* the test, but out of specs *after* the test. How could this be? One of the other wheels were out of specs by a quarter of a degree *before* the test, but ended up out of specs by more than half a degree *after* the test. How does this happen? I've since taken my vehicle to two other shops to get second opinions - without any mention of what Merchant's had stated. One shop has told me I needed one ball joint replaced, and the second shop has said I needed one replaced and a second ball joint was iffy. I feel Merchant's was deliberately trying to gouge me for repair work I did not need. I have the representative's employee number on the invoice, but cannot remember if his name was Scott or Tim. When I told him I did not want to do the work at this time (for nearly 800), he said he could knock 100 off the labor charges for me. If this was a legitimate charge, he wouldn't have to negotiate the price. He failed me on the state inspection, but wrote recommended on the invoice, with the estimate covering all four ball joints. I don't need a lawyer contacting me unless there are multiple complaints about Merchant's (there is another in Colonial Heights, Virginia), just 6 miles from our home. My next course of action is to contact the BBB and possibly file a formal complaint with Merchant's corporate office.

bought 2001 dodge durango new with 36 miles on it. It now has 108,000 miles and there is a ticking sound. I get my oil changed faithfully even had a dodge machnic tell me about the slude build up and he remove the sludge in the oil about a year and an half ago. If my engine is about to go Dodge needs to pay for this.I already paid for the upper ball joints that they would not before that recall. I can not afford to pay for a new engine especially since I have done my part in getting my car serviced when it was suppose to be.I have also replaced my back tail light about three times, this seems to be a defect on other durangos I see riding with the same light out,.
