Consumer Complaints

Keith of Windsor , ON November 10, 2009

I purchased the Hartz Flea drops Sunday at Canadian Tire.I applied per instructions about 3pm.My Goldie Doodle of 19 months immediately re-acted and has not stopped licking herself and had had the runs since.I have taken her to vet and awaiting results however after reading about this product I'm scared to death that we are going to lose her.Shame on you Hartz Shame on every retailer as well for offering this deadly product.Canadian Tire as large as you are, step up to the plate and do the RIGHT thing by leading the charge to get this off every shelf in North America.

Casey of Ranger, GA October 8, 2009

On Oct. 1st 2009 we purchased Hartz Ultraguard Flea and Tick drops at our local Wal-Mart for our family dog thinking that we would be treating, helping our dog but in all reality HARTZ KILLED our dog. Before treating our dog with the "Poision" he was a happy, healthy, playful dog, but the following day Charlie was awfully sick. He wouldn't eat, drink, walk, he wouldn't do anything that required him getting up and moving. After about four days of us just watching Charlie get worse, and worse we took him to the Vet, and come to find out he had so much poision in him, he was so toxic. He had a temp. of 104.5. After going through detoxication and meds the Vet decided to do some blood work. When the results came in it showed the worse, Charlie had Kidney failure. The Vet said that there was nothing he could do and the best thing that we could do for him would be to put him down to keep him from suffering. Although, that was a hard decision we had to do what was best for Charlie, so we had to put him to sleep. I DO NOT understand how this product can be on the shelves of stores. It is nothing less than a toxic, toxic poisoin, that killed one of our family members. I hope no-one has to go through what we did with this God awful product. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT USE HARTZ!!!!!!

Hartz Altra Guard Plus Flea and Tick with mosquito drops is poison, I put these drops on my Miniature Schnauzer mid June and still here in September I'm still dealing with scares and skin infections due to these drops,I would very much so like to sue the Hartz Corporation!

We used their flea & tick Gold product on our 10 pound Havanese. Within an hour it was obvious that something was wrong. She was digging at her skin and yelping. I called OSU Vet, and the suggested I wash her in Dawn dish liquid, which I did. It seemed to help some. But she continued to dig at herself and spin in circles. Then she started foaming at the mouth and throwing up. So we took her to the emergency room.

Used the Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea Drops for 16-30 lbs dogs. My 21 lb Britnany suffered severe burns to her back after uses this product. She had to be shaved and was on meds for 7 days to clear it up. I'm one of the lucky ones. I have read all the horrible stories people have had with these products and why the have not been taken off the shelf is beyond me.

How could [they] sell something that put animals in that sort of risk, you wouldn't let them sell a product that knowingly hurts children. Spent hours at the VET spent 200 on meds and lost time from work to be with her and take her to the vet. My poor dog was up most of the night still in pain from the burns.

Applied Hartz Ultraguard One Spot Treatment for Cats and Kittens with (2.9% Methoprene) 5 days ago. Noticed our cat was acting funny- shaking, making meowing sounds like she hurt. Upon investigation, saw 2 small wounds the size of fingertips.

Called the vet, and they reccommended to bathe her, cut the hair away, and then clean the wound. We will be monitoring her condition over the next while, hopefully she is alright.

I applied this product to my 8 month old cat. Immediately after applying it, she began foaming at the mouth and drooling excessive amounts. She ran around the room crying and trying to rub the liquid off of her back by rubbing on the floor. I immediately bathed her and rinsed out her mouth in case any of it had been ingested from her licking the area. She now has lesions on her back where the ointment was applied and pieces of her fur have fallen out. After doing some research on this product I learned that this happens to thousands and thousands of animals, and usually results in much more severe reactions (seizures, organ failure, even death). I do not understand how such a harmful product can still be sold at stores. You assume that you can trust a product that has been approved by the EPA. The EPA is there to protect us from situations like this. If thousands of people are suffering from this same problem from similar products, why has the EPA allowed the company to continue to sell their products? It is unbelievable. I will never buy a product from this company again. Buyers Beware.

Wynndra of woodland, CA April 29, 2009

On April 14th 2009 I purchased a box of Hartz Ultra Guard Pro for cats. Within two days my cat was deathly ill. I have taken her to the vet repeatedly. I am leaving to go again now. My cat will probably die because this product has poisoned her blood stream. This was a healthy 5 year old cat until I applied this stuff to the back of her neck. Countless dollars and probably a dead cat.

I want this product removed from the shelves. Hartz is murdering our animals with our lack of knowledge of there product. I have sent countless email and they do not respond. I call and there recording says they are busy and hangs up on me. Please help me and other animals by recalling this product. Hartz won't do it on there own they are to money hungry. I am heart broken watching my cat die before my eyes. I am physically sick trying to pay these vet bills trying to save her. I feel like I am a murder to my cat, when all I was trying to do was help her with a couple of fleas.

Melody of Baker City, OR January 12, 2009

Melody of Baker City OR (01/12/09)
I treated 4 of my lady cats with Hartz Flea and Tick Powder. MY deaf black cat Wobbles, first sickened and disappeared, assumed to have died under my house. She never left the yard due to her deafness and had her paths around the lawn and house so her disappearane was very sudden and mysterious. The next to sicken was Minnie, my tiny gold and brown tabby Manx. She sickened over the course of almost two weeks.

I don't have a lot of money but I finally talked a vet into seeing her without cash up front. I took her to the vet who found out that she was suffering from kidney failure. He did all he could for he but she died the next day. I brought her home to bury her in her favorite sunny place in the garden. The next to fall prey was cleo, who was a small golden brown tabby who loved to hang out on the roof. She got so sick and weak that the vet was afraid to try to take a blood sample from her.

I did all I could for her but her liver and kidneys were soon destroyed. She died a horrible death while I'll held her.I will never forget it. Poor, poor Cleo. When Minnie got sick and Cleo started showing the same symptoms I realized that something was causing this and the ONLY thing that all the cats had been treated with was the Hartz product.

I gave Inky, a black cat flecked with orange, the last cat who'd been treated, a bath to try to get the product off her. It worked and she is the only one of the three that survived. I truly believe my poor girls were killed by Hartz organophosphate Flea and Tick Powder.

I incurred vet charges I couldn't afford. Hartz agreed to pay for hair and blood testing for their product, which was done on Inky, and was to be performed on Cleo but she sicked too fast and was too weak to take blood from. Inky's test came back with a positive in the hair sample and she'd had a bath some time prior to the sample being taken and tested.I can't remember the results for the blood test, though I'm sure my vet has copies. I had to fight with Hartz for months to get them to issue a check to my vet, which they finally did, just a few weeks ago, almost a year after the first complaint. I received a check from them in October which I did not cash because there is a stamping on the stub that says if I cash it I will be releasing them from liability. This is very telling to me, but I don't know how to proceed with a case against them, have no money to hire an attorney and don't even know if I can win if I did. I want their deadly products off the shelf!
