Shirley of Des Plaines, IL January 6, 2008

Shirley of Des Plaines IL (01/06/08)
On Friday, Dec 28, 07, I had a flat on my Cavalier and required a new tire. It was snowing and I decided to buy a new tire at the Pep Boys at 5220 Touhy Ave. I waited 2.5 hours for the tire change and was flying to Hawaii and when I got back from my vacation and was driving my car around it started to make very loud obnoxious sound like there was another flat. I checked and no flat, but I was worried, so I brought it in the Pep Boys in Arlington Heights and after they drove around with my car, they told me it's my muffler so I brought it to a Merlin. The mechanic drove my car around and thought it was the ballbearings (it sounded like it). I said my car was working fine before I had my tire change and to please recheck the tire change made by Pep Boys. The mechanic was kind enough to recheck the job done by Pep Boys and he came back and had told me the loud noise was because the replacement tire was Not Secured and came loose, and if I had gotten on the the express way it would have come off and I would have had a very bad accident. Bad Job Pep Boys!  I filed complaints with the manager.

I took my car in for repair service. I was told the vehicle needed a tune up and rear center motor mount replaced. They did not have the motor mount in stock so they completed the tune up and would order the motor mount for that work to be completed at a later date. I was told I had to pay for the part (motor mount) in advance. The part was ordered through Mitsubishi of Brandon. Pep Boys quoted me 371.00 for the part alone, which I paid. When the part arrived and I went back to pep boys to drop off the car, I asked to see the part. I could not believe it cost 371.00.  They insisted that was the right price. I wrote down the part number and told them I will be doing some research and I would get back with them.

The next day I called Mitsubishi of Brandon where the part was ordered from and gave them the part number. I asked what the price is for the regular consumer. I was stunned to hear 82.00. I called Pep Boys and complained, they offered no explanation as to why they were charging me 371.00 for a part I could buy for 82.00. I was told to come by and they would refund my money. I did so, and again I asked why? No one could tell me. If I had not ask to see the part and question the value they would have installed it and gotten away with a 400% mark up. I called the homeoffice to log a complaint and I was told a district manager would call me back wihin 24 hours - he did not. I called back again and they again told me I would be called - it never happened. No one has been able to give me an explanation. How many other people are being taken advantage of?

I went for an oil change and they forgot to tie up the splash guard hanging loose & it broke hitting the ground. I drove back to the store.  The assistant manager told me to come back next day cause he had to talk to the guy who did the oil change. In mean time he put some tie-up strips to hold it.

I talked to the service manager Sal. They put some more stripes and more bolts, not the originals they lost though. Now the car hits the ground every ditch. Sal did a fine job but he can't do miracles cause the guard has missing pieces.  I went to car dealer and the damage is around 400 dollars plus labor and Pep Boys won't fix it.   Pretty expensive for an oil change. I should have stayed with the dealer.
